UnrealScript Masterclass - Part 1 - Re-creating Assault in UDK

In this DVD James Tan begins his series on re-creating Assault in UDK. James uses his 13 years of experience with Unreal Technology and Global UDK Educator with Epic, to demystify custom UDK game creation using UnrealScript. Creating a game can not be spoon fed to you in tutorials. It would take quite awhile to do. These videos cover everything needed conceptually to create a game. Currently 1/2 way threw tech demo on my game and I used my background I'm c++/java (2years) to code it, multiplayer ready. Just from these videos.

Yeah, like other guys here said, these tutorials just covers theoretically. Pretty said, thought eat3d would be capable of teaching-creating a custom game since the 'teacher' has 13 years of experience, right?

magnum164 - Hopefully the subtitles helps with my accent. If I go too slow and approach things in multiple ways then perhaps it would resolve the issue of "too much information in too little time". There is the conflict there if I do that, then some groups would feel that I didn't offer enough information. In the future, I will probably make my font larger and black on white color instead.

This is a horrible tutorials, I know a lot of programming language like C, java and other in wich I have a very gd understanding, I've been using udk for a lot of time, and I watched a lot of tutorials, never had a complaint except for this one, HORRIBLE!
I didn't understand a single word, the course is not interactive and too boring, he just recites what he knows,
everything is theoretical no application what's so ever.

Also it will be huge help if Eat3d provide a tutorial DVD for climbing and cover system in UDK.

The Tutor talk too fast and navigate too fast in code. he used to work with UDK for years but what about the people who learn it for the first time !!??

Sorry but this is a terrible tutorial, I will admit this first hand I am not predominantly a coder. I got this tutorial in the hope that I could improve my knowledge which unfortunately it hasn't.

My main problem with this tutorial is that it is not a tutorial. The title is re-creating Assault in UDK. however at no point does he 're-create' anything. He gives you the code and then goes over various bits. The game is not built up it's just dropped in front of you. I honestly felt lied to when I watched this. The trailer and blurb is not descriptive of what you are actually getting and if I could I would get my money back.

Don't get me wrong some of the bits of the tutorial are interesting but as he never actually makes them and just shows you the code and goes over it the actual educational benefit I got from this was tiny. Even if this tutorial was made for people with experience using unrealscript at no point does it say in the description of the video or the video itself. How am I supposed to know that this video is not meant for me?

I have rented a few eat3D videos from our university library before and they have been fantastic but after this travesty I think this will be my first and last purchase.

Great videos really helps with quick question and archetypes really make the flow so smooth. But im haveing a problem with the class archetypes where everytime i try to add a pawn archetype it just blinks and stays blank.
*** Never Mind i skipped a step after relooking at code

Anyone serious about unreal script should look at these videos. Not only for basic questions answered but game developmental tips from a game programmer's point of view.

Now that I have all 3 sets so far of this series, I wanted to make one more comment, since I have been without a desktop to actually program on I am just now starting to watch these with interest. I even peaked at the last video as I wanted to see ahead of time how he is using SVN to merge. I am using Branches to hold different versions of the game and I believe this helped me to learn how to merge new UDK code into each of my game types from the HEAD. There is no doubt James knows his stuff and although I use VS 2010, I am glad to see more professional type videos showing how easy it is to use VS or the Express editions as opposed to other Editors that while helpful, are sometimes unnecessary costs for Indie developers. I have been doing training for over 10 years, and the only recommendation I can add is since you have a strong accent, it would help to talk slower and work through the examples slower (I get the same complaint from my students, granted I am in a locked room with them Smiling. Taking into account someone may be following along and I have noticed sometimes you make changes on the screens without mentioning them as you go through, but after a while I pick up what you are doing. Not a major issue but it does make for people to have to stop/rewind a lot. Other than that, I believe a great series so far and it never hurts to get feedback from the community.

Very informative video learned a few tips which is what these videos are all about. About to watch the second video in the series. However, as I do training as well in a different field, it helps to select colors in something like the editor to make it easier for the user to follow along. Even with a calibrated monitor, white on blue background is hard to read/follow in compressed videos.

Setting character classes replicated to use for multiplayer gamemode was great! I'd love to see how to choose a specific character mesh / animtree to go along with it (unless I overlooked this).

3 other suggestions that are really interesting & important many would love and always ask about:

*Procedural Ledge Climbing / Hang moving sideways
*Cover System (trigger links or better procedural)
*Melee Weapon (Traces or trigger, not just fake & extended to a short projectile)
*(All 3rd person & replicated into the existing multiplayer gamemode)

I would have no problem supplying the animations for the existing udk skeletons to help with these. If you were able to cover these 3 topics I know that DVD would be a must have for a lot of people who are drawn in by UDK. The existing UT gamemodes are so wonderful, all networked & everything its the reason why I'm even using UDK. Additions like this would make it complete and rival anything on Unity's asset store. An artist would have to pay A LOT to get a base project like this networked.

Adjust the collision cylinder size. You can find this in the Collision category for the Pawn, adjust the radius and the height.

UDKWeapon is based from Weapon. Thus UDKWeapon, for intents and purposes, is a Weapon. A strong reason why you would use UDK, is to use the existing systems out there. I wanted to demonstrate how to create a weapon system that was driven from Editor created fire mode objects and archetypes; and I believe I did that. I don't believe I explicitly stated that I would teach you how to make weapon, but rather that I'd over the existing system.

Hello, Great DVD. Though I'm confused on how to create a custom class archetype from scratch (specially new player types), as opposed to copying an existing class archetype node (AssaultClass). I'm learning to mod using this tutorial and get a better understanding of how all the systems are working, but can't seem to get my own class to be recognized. Copying an existing class archetype was a great shortcut, but wanted to go through in more detail from the ground up. Any info or feedback would be greatly appreciated.

*EDIT* Never mind, I missed a critical section in the very beginning of the DVD that explained everything. Again, great work!

Just bought the DVD and went through it. I highly suggest this training to anyone starting up with unrealscript (provided that you are a programmer already). I wish I had a resource like this back then when I was trying to figure out each and every thing, how they relate to each other, etc. The best thing about this DVD is that it saves you a serious amount of time trying to figure out stuff on your own. If you have plenty of time to dedicate learning the code base, then you may skip this DVD. Otherwise, if you want to get up and running fast, then this DVD is a must have. The only point that I didn't like is talking briefly about replication as this topic needs an entire DVD on its own, and James kinda assumes that you know what it is and the constructs related to it which can be confusing a little bit. Apart from that, I think James has done a perfect job introducing the listner to the code base. I will be looking forward to the next part!

I just bought this tutorial cause they led me into thinking that they were going to explain us how to create a custom weapon from the base Weapon class, instead they spend 20 minutes of the 6th tutorial to explain you a bit of how the class works, and then they jump to their ready-made Assault weapon class, hold on tight, derived from UDKWeapon (and this is what they are using for the rest of the tutorial).
Not a bad tutorial (even if most of it it's theoretical rather than practical); but I want to be sure that no one falls, like me, to the false assumption (and a misleading comment from James) that they're going to teach you how to make weapons out of the base Weapon class rather than the useless UDKWeapon class.

I not only cover ReplicationInfo but I also cover how weapons work on the network and other replication topics. But I do also demonstrate how to use the replication info to allow players to set their character class (as the DVD covers how to create a class based deathmatch game).

Weapons in this DVD are based on either UDKWeapon or Weapon.

@Oniram Yes it is great to see that this video covers replication info. I am also very pleased to see that it covers most topics(shown in the video) from the base udk classes like HUD, PlayerReplicationInfo, Pawn etc rather that the UTClasses(UTPawn, UTHUD, etc) like most other tutorials annoyingly do.

But I need one confirmation, Is the Weapon system covered in this video also covered by using the base Weapon class and its related classes rather than UTWeapon class n system?
I really really hope it is covered using the base UDK weapon system (Weapon Class etc) and NOT using the UTWeapon System
