Unreal Development Kit 2 - Creating Cinematics & Environmental Effects
Back by popular demand, Sjoerd “Hourences” De Jong builds upon the information taught in his first DVD (An Introduction and Application) by creating an entire in-game cinematic. Sjoerd starts with a custom existing level and adds rain, wind, thunder, lightning, splashes, puddles, and even plants that react to wind in order to bring the environment to life. From there he goes through adding a character to the scene, adding multiple cameras, triggering a lighting strike, creating an electrifying effect, creating a fire, blowing off a small door and finally setting everything up in kismet/matinee for the final cinematic.
You will also learn from an Unreal Master exactly how to develop your own workflow and start making amazing cinematics inside UDK right now.
About the Instructor:
Sjoerd “Hourences” De Jong has been working with the Unreal Editor for over 10 years and has worked as titles such as Huxley, Warpath and UT 2004. Sjoerd recently Designed and directed the UT3 mod "The Ball" that has already won a range of awards in some of the world's largest competitions such as the ModDB MOTY and the MakeSomethingUnreal contest. @anon,
The tutorial goes over the creation of a cinematic without the need for generating too many meshes. You could always use the supplied files in UDK.

@masterofmagic420,
Some of the assets used in the tutorial have been removed by Epic, which unfortunately we have no control of. Try downloading the JULY 2010 version of UDK and using that.

Hello all, I purchased this tutorial as a digital download. I'm using the July 2012 version of UDK and I put all the project files into the required destinations, but when I load up the map it pops up an error saying that these items can't be found:
Material HU_Floors.BSP.M_HU_Floors_BSP_Sidewalk04 in Eat3DCinematicEffects
SoundCue A_Movers.elevators.A_Elevator_Stone02_OpenStopCue in Eat3DCinematicEffects
SoundNodeWave A_Ambient_Loops.Exteriors.air_wind14 in Eat3DCinematicEffects
Texture2D LT_Floors.BSP.Materials.T_LT_Floors_BSP_Organic11b_D in Eat3DCinematicEffects
Can anyone help me fix this???
metalliandy
@Anon, I'm not sure what you mean. Everything loads perfectly here with the July 2012 build.

Hy all.

This is very, very good tutorials, but I have a problem with project files.
When I try to load " Eat3DCinematicEffects_Done.udk " UDk craches(just Stop Working). What is the problem? Maybe that I'm using the latest version of UDK? Thanks for replay

Hey Riki!
I believe this would work for very specific scenes, it can't be generalized or selected as Plan A you know. I would've preferred Hourences going through techniques that can apply to most scenes. But anyways, I still find this DVD extremely useful and entertaining. Lots of content, informative and definately worth every penny I paid for it.
Riki
Thanks seenooh for the feedback and kind words! There are many ways to create rain and believe it or not Epic uses this technique in some of their games and we also used it in Blacksite: Area51.

My Review:
Just saw the DVD. Excellent stuff there. I liked everything really except for the rain effect. Hourences used an inpractical way to create that effect. If I have a large scene with lots of buildings, like a city for example, the method he demonstrated is useless. He said that there are better ways, like doing it in a post process material effect, I was wondering that since he knows that, why didn't he waste all the time showing us an ineffective method? Once he went to the Shader Complexity mode, I was like oh my God that's useless.
But anyways, I'd rate this DVD 8/10. There are alot of nice tips and tricks that will save your time and effort.

Alright, Thanks for the support metalliandy, I couldn't find your replies in my Spam folder. I don't know what's wrong with my mailbox. But I have re-downloaded the file and it works perfect now.
I'm going to be able to watch the whole training kit now at last!
Thanks again and have a great new year!

@Hazem El-Sherif,
We have responded to your support request that was sent yesterday, but it looks like it might have gone into your Spam box. Please ensure that our emails are not filtered incorrectly, so that they can get through.
Can you try re-downloading the files again please?

Hi, I am looking for some help on the issue below. I have sent twice to support@eat3d.com and I am getting no replies:
I have purchased this training title a few days ago: Unreal Development Kit 2 - Creating Cinematics & Environmental Effects
I have a problem with the file called: eat3d_udk2_video_part_1.zip
I have downloaded it twice and each time I get the same error when I try to unzip it.
The message that pops up says that the file "udk_cinematics_01_rain.mp4" is corrupt.
As a result I got all the files from the training title except for the video file mentioned above.
The other zip files of the training have been extracted without any problem.
Would someone tell me what to do, and why support isn't answering me?
Thanks

Is udk capable of doing these from scratch?

Hey Hourences! There are no gorillaz in South or Central America. lol not even zombie ones.
Riki
Thanks for the honesty and feedback. We take all suggestions seriously and put each video through an extensive beta process before releasing it to the public (one of our team members is also dutch).
Having said that we all love Sjoerds teaching and hopefully will make more with him in the future since we are convinced only a minority would find any trouble with the accent. Its impossible to avoid this with our videos though since our videos reach the entire world and some people will have problems with certain things, however we will continue to make sure each release is as high quality as possible that appeals to the largest number of people.

@Riki. I'm Dutch too and I don't have such a strong accent or pronounce words as badly as he does.
No offense but I just feel it makes us other Dutchies look a bit bad,
now the entire world will think we all sound like that.
I'll still watch this vid because he's good at what he does.
Riki
Sjoerd is Dutch so English is not his first language. Personally I really enjoy other accents and as long as I can understand what they are saying its not an issue. I hope its not too bad!
Ariella (not verified)
This vid seems interesting, but I just can't stand his accent. He obviously knows what he's talking about but I also had issues getting throug his other vid. Things like (how it's pronounced.) "moedeling" just ticked me off a little. It's "modeling!"
