Hey Guys
I'm chipping away at the Cascade FX DVD and right now the plan is to break it up in to two parts. The first part being a walk through of most of the settings, modules, options etc. That first part although it will be thorough currently is to only use simple sprite images such arrows and plus symbols to more easily get the point across and easily show what's happening. The second part would be a step by step walk through of an explosion.
Thoughts?

It may be cool to have a few more practical examples to help out in a wide range of different particle effects.
It would be neat to do somethings like hit effects. Hit effects are usually pretty quick and you could do like a spark one and a blood one. Ooozing liquid like that would be sweet. Another idea could be a blast effect from a gun. There are so many games out there with amazing gun effects (UT3 especially).

I might even be a good idea to recreate some of the effects in that game using their assets, explaining how it was done. The more variety and of course cool effects, the better. I think that was one of the main drawbacks of the vfx dvd was not enough variety, and also even with the materials dvd for that matter.

Rustys Kismet DVD did a better job and hopefully each DVD that comes out will be closer to perfection!

oh, and explosions FTW!

I love it man!

I think that the creation of blood splatter on the screen and various hit effects would be sweet...
Also Riki's idea about going through some of the UT3 stuff and showing how it was made would be cool..though maybe with fresh assets (or at least some fresh stuff)

I feel so weird pickin apart the Unreal FX but that may be a more efficient way to teach some things. Thanks for the notes.

Sounds exciting. Is the new latest Unreal engine available for this tutorial to be demonstrated?

We should still be using UT3 because its the only version that is available to the public. Hopefully epic will release a new version in the future, but Im not sure if they will. It was a shame that they didnt get to release Gears2 on PC because of all the piracy. I havent heard anything about a new release, if anyone hears anything please post it! Smiling

My e3 stuff has more or less passed and I'm back at it.  Tonight I'm creating some water materials/textures for the water dripping into a puddle with reflection effect.

Perhaps going through all the elements would make for a great DVD,maybe even simulating weather conditions. just my 2 cents.

That's an excellent idea.  After I've got the bulk of my currently planned stuff done, I'll see if I can squeak some of that stuff in.

Cool, that's something I been trying to figure out how to do it. Thanks.

Just re-created the actual puddle, using the actual assets that will ship with the DVD.  I also just created the material I'll be using for the ripple caused by the water drips.  I imagine tomorrow I'll have the water drip effects done.  I'd post screens but I'm doing most of this work on my laptop and it's not always connected to the internets.

Slowly but surely.  I'm hoping to have it ready for capture this month.

I just finished capturing Chapter 1, going over the interface in Cascade.  I hope to do 1 or 2 chapters every other night or so.  I do have company visiting this weekend so that'll slow things down.  Other than that... it's comin' along.

About half of the capturing has been done.  With the exception of a basic trail and beam system I'm done capturing the basics.  So far I've got just over 2hrs of un-edited footage.  Once I start capturing the more visually appealing VFX, I'll post some pics.

I can't wait Mr. Bryan. I stated in anonther post that it would be cool to add weather effects to the DVD. Are you going to be adding weather effects like rain and snow? you mentioned it as a possiblity.

That's right.  Thanks for the reminder.  I'll definitely go over a method very similar to how they did the rain in, Gears.  I'll see what I can dig up on Snow as well, but rain should be in for sure.

I know it's probably to late to suggest this but I'm hoping you'll go over making fire, water, lighting, or maybe ice, you know the elements. This might call for a 2 part series. I can't wait.

 Hey Kaze,

I'm done capturing the DVD and it's in the finishing stages.  Unfortunately due to time (it's going to be about 6 hours already) I couldn't fit in the rain.  If you've got the GoW engine I wouldn't mind posting a couple screen shots and walking you through what the Epic guys did.  That's more or less what i was going to do, only in the UT3 engine.  Let me know!

That would great! I was always interested in how people put weather effects in video games. I don't have the GOW engine but it couldn't be that much different then UT3. You could probably make a mini tutorial out of it instead of getting rid of the video you already have. Thanks a lot Bryan and I can't wait unitl the DVD comes out.

cheers
