UE3 & Turntables for demoreels-help needed?

Hi all,

I wonder if anyone can help, as I have hit a bit of a digital brick wall!

I have some models that I want to render turntables for a new demo reel, in order to best show the models I want to have them displayed in real-time. The models look fairly okay in Unreal Ed, and I would prefer to have a turntable from the editor, as this is how they should be presented ingame to prospective employers.

However I spent several hours last nigt searching for any sort of tutorial that will show how this could possibly be achieved in Unreal Ed but, I have not found a single tutorial that shows any examples of this.

I appreciate that you can screen grab etc, but I shotactually want to show this work as a turnaround for a demoreel.

When I try and create a half way suitable render set up in Mental ray the renders always suck and of course this is not a real-time representation anyway, so really defeats the point. I have incidentally tried playblasting the animation from the viewport...but the quality seems very poor.

The only other alternative I have found is Santiago Orgas -XNormal, this is a free app normally used for creating normal/AO depth maps etc from hi to low poly, but it also has the bonus feature of a 3dviewer.

However, I have found the the 3D viewer is a little limited, one of my models has some alpha maps for some foliage and xnormal does not seem to be able to handle it all that well. This is not a diss of the app which is excellent in many ways. It can be found here - http://www.xnormal.net/1.aspx

I had considered maybe using an app such as fraps or camstudio and just record the static mesh browser and rotate the mesh or something. I am still getting used to unrealEd and have not used matinee or anything so I am in need of any tutorials that may cover this, if anyone has any advice or better ideas I would appreciate the help.Confused

I don't know much about the UE, so I can't help you with that.

What you could do is set up a camera-path in Max and render real-time in the viewport using the DirectX Shader. Then play the camera-animation and capture it with Fraps.

Never tried this myself though, so I'm not sure on the quality of this method.

So as some of you may know, Rusty Semsprott is doing an Unreal Kismet DVD. The DVD is actually already done and ready to ship, however Im just waiting on Epic to give the go ahead to release it. Hopefully it will be available very soon.

So i was watching the dvd and everything you would want to do here is covered. I could give away all the tips here for free like I was planning, but It wouldnt be fair to Rusty who put so much time and effort to make the DVD.

I could however append the dvd with a free tutorial online after the release and so on.

Hopefully soon!

Looking forward to that DVD coming out. I think a free tutorial online after the DVDs release would be a great idea.

Hi Riki,

Thanks again for taking the time to post a response. Looking forward to the new Unreal Kismet DVD by Rusty Semsprott, good to hear that what I want to do may be possible from the content covered in the DVD, sounds really promising!

The additional of a tutorial online after the release also sounds cracking!

Hope it doesnt take too long for Epic to give the greenlight.

I hope to officially announce this soon. I also plan to do a short video on how to have a camera going around the mesh instead of the mesh rotating. I had it working but when I captured and did it, something went wrong. Ill try and fix it and recapture soon also.

Hey Riki, fantastic tutorials!!

Shorter tutorials more frequently is a good way too go i'd say, i did some for crysis and it really kept me motivated, makes a nice change of pace from doing the longer ones all the time, keep up the really good work!

Riki,

Thanks for taking the time to create this awesome tutorial.
Guys having quickly watched the tutorial this is an absolute MUST purchase for anyone who wants to show there portfolio pieces off professionally and in the best light.

A very small price to pay for the HD quality download ( I know I will be buying it shortly - when i get a chance!).

The detail of the content is exactly what I was after and prompted my original question. This information just does not seem to be available anywhere else....believe me I have looked.

Riki, I appreciate that creating a shorter tutorial must be just as time consuming but this is without a shadow of doubt an excellent asset to the EAT 3D community.

I have been a long time lurker on many tutorial website /forums etc and I have purchased several training resources over the years since leaving University and I have to say that the DVD's you guys are producing are extremely practical for those wishing to gain an glimpse into current gen techniques etc.

I'm not sure what it is like for others but I can read online articles till im blue in the face (often!) about some of the methods being used but it is not until you see it visually, - put into practice that I can actually pick up and understand the workflow/ methodology being used.

The free tutorials are an excellent idea, I hope that this method of delivery continues as bite size additional content really works well. My only issue is that I think you should clone yourself a few times so we can have more content more often!

Those of you wishing to gain access into the Industry (my self included incidentally,) help to support the Riki and his colleagues by downloading it - I'm sure you wont be disappointed for the small price to pay!

My thanks for this excellent resource long may it continue.

Okay thats my recommendation and rant - im off for a cup of tea and a sit down!
