I've been working on this bike for a while now, but I'm only about half way through on the pedastal and the bike itself still feels like it needs a lot of work/changes/touch ups.  However, I've seem to have grown really tired of working on it and I guess I have a lot of misconceptions about it.  Hoping for inspiration/critiques/motivation to help me push through and finish it up or at least get it to a place where I can say it is done for now and good enough.

When I started it I had no idea so many other people had also done it, some of which are really outstanding like Christopher Desse's.  So I'm kinda down on the fact that it's not really unique at this point.

Also, since I'm into it a ways I'll post some of my old screens to show how I got to this point.

Never really done a WIP thread before so here goes nothing.

I started with a high poly, built the low poly from it, just removed some holding edges, normal map came out really badly.  I had to do a lot of paint overs on it.  I started making some parts just for the low poly like inner walls so I wouldn't have to do double sided in UDK and that kind of led to me abandoning the high poly version so there isn't a really nice smooth version of the bike for me to show off.

texture and wires for the low poly.  The low poly is short of 15K tris.

I was advised to do a pedastal which was a good idea, but I rushed it and just didn't do a good job with it overall so I would end up re-doing it.

I think this bike has really good potential. The body of it already looks pretty cool in terms of design, flow, and visual aesthetic. Parts of the bike don't feel like they belong with this current design, so I would consider changing things like the handles, front side protrusions and console design. It looks like you already began making this high poly?

I would do a nasty 1 - 2 hour proxy model of the full bike first. Especially for a design that you are concepting. If there was art and ref to look from that was already original, then the concept stage would already be done Sticking out tongue

But, I really think a proxy model would do you some real good here. The back of the bike looks really cool so far. Its mostly the front lower part that looks like its been quickly developed.

As for inspiration, there is a ton out there on motorcycles luckily Smiling
Here are some cool design I just ran across on youtube:

You can find a lot though. Cloud's motorcycle from Final Fantasy 7: The Movie. Or something like Vexhille.

Don't give up on it though bud. This can really shine if you pour some passion into it Smiling

Woops, posted a bit too late, sorry about that. I only based my findings on the maya shots you posted.

Few updates, this puts me around the weekend.  I'll have another update later tomorrow.  I've updated the lighting and the lampost specifically made it look less like a glowing rod and moved my lights to where the bulb is (added new static mesh for light as well).  I also put a couple fill lights in the middle of the bike because I felt it was too dark there and I re-upped the transparency on the windshield.  It was too muddy at first, then went to too transparent, tomorrow you'll see it's at like 3% opacity.

@ceribral - those concept bikes are really cool.  I have a lot of ideas that could add to the bike and the scene, but I feel like I should be farther along than I am.  I'm trying to build a portfolio in order to get a job and I feel like I don't have a lot of content so sticking with this for even longer worries me, but at the same time I had planned on trying to make this my best work so idk.  You're right the console could definitely use a spruce up.  The normal for it came out terrible, but the design is probably dated as well.  I went with the design straight from the movie.  I had metal in place of the wood finish at one point but I changed it cause the texturing wasn't up to snuff.  I was thinking of maybe changing it back?

Here are a couple shots of my references/mood board.  The model is primarily based on the first with a couple elements from the second and I was going for the kind of texture detail in the third.

If I were doing Kaneda's bike, I would use different reference. I personally think that part where the screen is should be at greater angle, so it would give speedy feel. This way, to me, it feels like a giant vespa. But it's just me, everyone should do by own feeling.

Anyway, here's what I have in mind.

Akira ftw! one of my fav. movies Smiling

You have moved so far with this, its hard to crit anything Sticking out tongue Try adding a little more spec to the metal and using a gloss map would really help differentiate between the rubber and paint Smiling

@ceribral - I used your dust tutorial in there a lil bit.  I don't know if it's too hard to see and I should up it some.

@gundark - do you mean the windshield or console?  I can try and change the model a bit, but it's kinda hard at this point since I've already laid out UVs and textured it pretty far.

@chojin - thanks, which earlier stuff in particular did you like?

@metalliandy - thanks for promotion!  I crunched the levels in the spec and upped them in the material/s.  I also upped my reflection/gloss map a touch and then I lowered my scene desaturation some as well.

What do you guys think?  More shine?  I am attaching my materials and texture maps that I'm using at this point so you have an idea of what I have going on.  I have two materials because I needed a separate material to handle the transparency in the windshield and things.  I was actually thinking of trying to make it rustier and grungier.  This also has some of the updates that I was talking about yesterday.

Console. That part just above the seat. Fuel tank have very few vertices, so this should be very easy. Seeing the maps, i think that texturing wouldn't cause much trouble either. Try it and see if you like it.

Wow I was in a rush and it never hit me that this was the bike from akira >.< hmm... (Pulls out pen and paper to make a note - "Jeremy, make time for sleep")

Ok with that knowledge out there its looking really good man Smiling
I loved the movie akira and the idea of the storyline. Its been a while since I have seen it, but if my memory serves me correctly, my favorite scenes are when he walks out into the hallway and liquidates the soldiers / staff personnel onto the hallway walls Sticking out tongue Or, when he stops the tank shell flying at him.

Back to the model though. You used the dust particles? or dust in your texture? If you used particles I can't even spot them so cranking up the size or power would probably be a good option. Also, what style were you more trying to achieve with this? Realistic? Toon? or etc?

Keep up the good work!!!

I liked the one you have in your portfolio, it´s cool to see the progress you know!

Man, why havn´t they made a game out of Akira? That could be so awesome...

That's a good idea. Since i like Akira too, maybe we can gather and make a game ourselves. We have knowledge and love.

Sorry for the delay, got a few updates and should have some more later on.  After looking at these screens again I think I need to lighten my shadow/environment color.  I added some textures to the wood planks/fence area and some "trim treats" around like crumpled papers, cans, sandbags, pebbles and grass.

@ceribral - i cranked up the dust particles at some point but I'm not sure if it's in this update or not.  I was going for something more realistic, but yesterday I was flirting with the idea of putting a edge detection shader on it to give it more of a afro samurai, naruto, toonish thing.  The shading network looked pretty complex and I'm not quite sure how to add it to the post process chain, but I think I'll give it a go at the end of this thing just to see how it looks and turns out, can't hurt and might be cool.

@Josh - thanks! yeah, I'm reworking the street concrete, I'll post a shot of the sculpt, or did you mean the sidewalk concrete?  I know it could probably use a bit more love as well, I wasn't really thrilled with how the color of it came out wanted a bit more gray.  I'll try and go back and tweak it this week.

Looking pretty nice Smiling

You may want to damage up the concrete underside a little more and add some more Med/Small detail in there.

Im still loving this though...nice job Laughing out loud

Thanks!  Here is an update on the light.

Looking good so far. Here's a couple of suggestions I have. After doing my own set of dust particles, I was never able to get it to look quite realistic. Going back and examining some real dust in the light and running my finger across a dusty window sill I noticed a lot of the particles you see in the light aren't actually circular but more hair like. So, you get something like this. This seems to be a common problem in CG where all the particles are completely circular but the reality is that it's a combination of several different types.

Also, you may want to change the color of the light to give it a slight orange tint. I find it tends to warm scenes up a bit. Also, if you play with the radius and light source radius values on your point lights, you can get some really nice gradient fall offs. If your running the latest version of UDK and in DX11 mode put this command in the console "scale set MaxMultiSamples 4" and it'll turn on 4x AA in your scene.

I tinted the lights orange a bit and tried to get things a bit brighter, but I know the lighting still needs work, more contrast, brighter in some areas.  I put a shader on the scene that does edge detection to give it a 'Borderlands-ish' feel and I was really liking how it came out.  I also did a paint over, but I'm going to stick to my original concept above till it's done.

I don't have DX11 on my machine right now or I'd turn that on, but thanks for the tips.

I put in the new pedastal too.  I know the scene still needs a bunch of work, I've been getting caught up with other things lately and I'm terrible at posting regularly, but hopefully one day I'll finish and it'll come out pretty good.

Not sure if I should or want to post the model ... any one else have thoughts on that?

In any case, here are some more finished screenshots or versions of the bike.
