Hey again, just me continuing posting work.

This is a Remington 870 shotgun that I made for a zombie apocalypse scenario. Some civilian has found it and wrapped an ordinary flashlight on the thing. I´m just starting to lay down the basic texturing on the thing, and did a quick paint-over so I know sort of what I want. Feel free to C&C, folks!

What's the poly count on this thing? I'm currently making a zombie apocalypse character for a small release. Could maybe use this...

It´s at 3371 tris, so it´s a bit over the top for an fps perhaps. I´ll post the wireframe aswell, should´ve done that earlier Sticking out tongue

I´m not quite done with it personally, I´m gonna try and figure out what I´m missing.

Tried out a new texture for the tape, should probably redo the meshes and UV though :S Suggestions?

Doesn't look too bad. The tape seems a bit puffy for some reason. Have u tried experimenting with wider tape like duct tape or something?

I decreased the intensity of the normals on the tape, I think it looks a little better. I´m going to try and fix the mesh and make it a bit bigger, but in the meantime I´ve taken some pre-final pictures of the shotgun.

Well done bud. Lookin great. Keep it up. I'd like to see some scratches along the edges of specific areas. This is coming along nicely and think i can use it for sure. Smiling Once this is done we can chat about optimizing the model down for this specific project Smiling

Thanks!

Sure man, just post some picture of where you want the scratches and I´ll fix them. What kind of project is it exactly?

I agree with tac0m. You should definitely look into using a wider tape like duct tape. The current tape you have on their doesn't seem believable in the durability factor to me. If I am going to be running around shooting zombies in a dark alley I would want to make sure that flashlight stays on.

Yea. Also if you can make it look a little tighter, that would go a long way toward the solid look too Smiling

Thanks Jeremy! The tris count for this is 7192. Here are some more pics and texture map( half size shown, original size = 2048*2). Now let´s finnish my shotgun!

What I would do is go buy 2 small piece of cheep PVC pipe at home depot about the sizes you are looking for. Buy some duct tape and tape them together. Don't be neat about it though. Do it fast like you are in a hurry. Standing still to long in a Zombie appocylipse can get you killed. So try to imagine you are the character taping it on frantically.

Do some simulated wear and tear on the tape. Maybe take some sand paper to it around the tape edges to make the tape fray a bit. Make sure to create some good overlapping wrinkles. Rub some dirt on it and leave it out in the sun to dry out a bit and dry rot. THat will help you see how it would look if it was used and abused alot.

Another good tape to use would be sport tape. That stuff is pretty durable and gets dirty and grunged up looking very fast. This might help you get the look you want faster.

Did you do a HP for it?

Thanks McGergs for your suggestion! I took some bottles and wrapped together with duct tape, I think it lookd ok. Here are some shots of the shotgun update, and the HP for the container!

Looking good! I have one more tip for you. I see you are getting the weathered look down pretty good.
This last bit should help make it pop just a little more. It will make it look dirty in the cracks and crevices where dirt and grime and old blood would collect.

Take a good rusty metal texture. For example this texture from cgtextures.

In your top most photoshop layer just below your occlusion layer place this texture. Turn it into a spmart object. This way you can duplicate it as you may need and you can still always swap out the original with something else if You don't like it.

Now do a layer blending mode of "overlay". adjust the opacity maybe to 50%. You will have to eyeball this part to see what works best. Now line the dark areas of the rust overlay with your edges and grooves scaling if need be. If you made the rust a smart object you are not destroying your pixels so you can make as many size or rotation changes as you want to look good. Apply a mask and just paint expose the areas you want to show of the rust texture. Use a brush that is noisy in nature like a splatter brush of some sort. Duplicate the rust as you need into a new layer and move it around and reuse it where need while painting a new mask. This should help make the corners of your gun and even some surfaces look really weathered and crusted with dry blood etc.

Hopefully this makes sense. I can do some example screenshots later for you if you need them.

McGergs;

What I´m doing is kindof the thing you suggested. I use some image of rust for example, like the one you linked,

but I just use "select color" in PS and extract the amount of scratches, rust or dirt I want, and then manipulate Hue/Saturation

until they look good on the mesh. And then I use a textured brush to erase here and there.
