Hi everyone,

my name is Björn (try to pronounce it "biurrn" or so ^^). I am kind of new to the whole 3D and game world. I studied a course where I got first insights and basics and now I want to specialize on 3D modeling and environment Art for games.

Currently I am creating my personal Portfolio website and I thought I may drop by and get some critiques regarding the design and usability from all you very very talented people out there.

Note: I actually need to do an internship to finally finish my bachelor, that's why I try to include more stuff apart from just the section I want to focus on (maybe I have better chances if I show a variety of skills). Later I want to just focus on 3D environment art/level design. All pictures and texts are still dummies.

Thanks a lot!

greets

OK - No one else has waded in. I am going to be brutal - because unfortunately employers are. Take this in the spirit it is ment - constructive critisism. The last thing you need are peeps saying something looks cools - because there is always someone devistatingly better out there!

.....before you read on - look at some of the personal sites you can link from http://cghub.com or indeed this site.

1. Show what you are good at - if your a modeler - show models/animator - show animations - etc. A jack of all traded is bugger all use to an employer - too many courses try to do a bit of everything and it makes our lives harder -therefore you are less likely to get an interview - let alone a job. You have to be fricking good at whichever area to get a job - you will never cut it in a discipline unless you focus. Be a specialist - not a generalist. Interest in other areas should manifest itself in peripheral interests - IE - good at modelling - also be good in photoshop/zbrush/fine art.

2. This site looks like someone entering the industry. Find a website of someone who is already in and doing lots of additional art - and aim to show that level of quality.

3. 5 ballachingly good images is better than a sackful of crappy mediocrity. Quality over quantity - at all times. Show texture thumbs/wires and beauty shots. If each image doesn't stand on its own.

4. Show it to friends/family/industry professionals and people that will rip it to shreds. You need to iterate and take constructive critisism. Until the day you show your folio to someone and their jaw hits the floor.

5. Start doing good deeds! You need to rack up all the good karma you can lay your hands on to get your foot in the door. Smiling Be careful what you wish for. The games industry is fun but very hard work and it comes with a lot of sacrifices and long hours. Make sure you keep your eyes on the prize.

I am drilling and drilling myself at the moment on my new site - believe me - I apply this and a lot more to my own work. coming soon. I'll link you when its up.

Good luck soldier!

hey devilshands,

finally an answer! I appreciate that very much. All the things your are telling me are right and I will take them seriosly. It's true I am still very newbie and I think far from even entering the industry. As you have seen on my website there still isn't any content and I am currently working on my first pieces.

For the design of my page I used several examples of sites like http://www.clement-melendez.com, http://www.helderpinto.com, http://www.laurenscorijn.com and http://www.pioroberson.com

You told me a lot about spirit, what people in the games industry need and want and my aim is to become this kind of person Eye-wink Intentionally my question was, if my website - the layout and the design - are simple and usable enough. The content which is still missing, I will add time after time.

Thanks a lot for your help, I wish everyone would take the time and help the newbies as it is very hard to enter the industry.

I entered several other forums, but mostly my threads get no answers. Don't know why. Seems like people aren't interested in Newbie pieces or somehting.. Thats why I appreciate your answer even more! Thank you!
