Mech Concepting
So, I lost interest in the robot in a soda can ... just wasn't very exciting. I've started working on a concept for Mech, one of my favourite subjects, the inspiration for this came from the suit helmets in Prometheus. I loved the big bulbous glass dome. Unfortunately, I've lost that feeling and will need to re-vist the canopy to bring it back.
Well ... I understand what you're saying, and there is some wisdom in it ... but I'm just not feeling it right now. I will most likely come back to it in a couple on months with a fresh perspective.
I don't seem to be able to embed further videos in the replies? ... no doubt I'm doing it wrong.
For what ever reason I can't seem to embed another video ... so here's a link
Your mech warrior is also starting to look nice, like it a lot better now with the new hatch.
Its nice to be able of just putting one project aside for later when its starting to feel a bit heavy, but be careful not to start up too many projects like that. Then your never going to finish them. I think its more fun to look back at completed work pieces and renders rather then a lot of half done things no matter how old they are. Good luck with this one, will be interessting to follow. :)
weird :/ ...but a link works fine too!
So I need to know if the design will stand up to animating, so I did a quick rig before I started work this morning, then spent my lunch break doing a quick animation to test how the legs held up. It was a well worth while exercise as there is some work needed to change the mechanical design in order the hips can achieve a full range of movement. It's a quick animation, and I had a bit of fun with it.

I've updated the design of the hip joint. Should work better now. Also switched to youtube as I can uploda as many HD videos a week for free ... yes I am a tight arse.
Nice work
Cheers!

Foot defined and designed, as well as some work on the chassis. Hoping to get more done tonight

Further work to the power unit and the canopy hinge. First link is just the model and the second is using my test animation. Despite having modelled the feet, I've not yet rigged them up, so they don't animate as yet. Sorted.

Awesome frog bot. Love his lurchy backside and the fact he looks a little like he has soiled his immacuately modelled mech pants. Work faster bingo.....faster....this is da shizzle
Cheers man ... your words are like pure liquid gold to me. Anyhoo.
Incremental update

First link is a model update, second has the animation test.

Started work on building the cab interior

So much for my early night damn it!
Started messing with rendering techniques ... hours slip away. Ho-hum.
Little experiment in rendering
More rendering experimentation, image based lighting and testing glass refraction and chromatic aberration. Animated a camera rising up.

Rendered the test animation to a higher quality. Done some more work on the headlamps, cables, small details.

Good stuff dude. Like the tri lamp in the front of the cab. I can't wait for you to get the feet rigged, it makes the animation look slightly stilted because your accommodating the shape of the feet in their fully spread mode. Looking good all round. Why don't you try a district 9 white and orange colour scheme. Loving this project bingoz
Yeah totally. Just figured the animation was enough to test the overall model. I'll rig it fully when I'm done building. Less chance of me getting side tracked by wanting to animate it.
The district 9 colour scheme sounds like a fine one. I'm also going to take a look at cosmic motors for some further inspiration.
Cheers man.
Awesome works. The rendering is so beautiful.
Haha nice model
Detailing.

Things have been moving slowly, detailing takes a long time. I've been experimenting with lighting and shaders, which has been a distraction from finishing the model and rigging. Although this hasn't been entirely a bad thing, it's given me time to reflect and gain valuable input from some very talented people I work with. Cheers to Mr Jake Gumbleton, a very fine concept artist http://jakegumbleton.blogspot.co.uk/
And to someone you may know, Devilshands, I won't mention his real name, as I'm not entirely sure he's appreciate it! Lots of really good input from him.
Cheers chaps.
Anyhoo, I will be playing with some of the forms, and exploring some more design details.
In the meantime, here's a turntable render

Experimenting with materials
Looks great, man!
Can you post some wires?
very nice !
the legs are great
Many thanks. Work is crushing the life out of me at the moment, so work has slowed dramatically on my project. This is the latest turntable.

Another video, showing the wires: as requested

On the off chance anyone is interested ... I have done a little bit more work on this.

and a motion test
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWg3RbaS-Lg
still in progress ... but I'm chipping away at it slowly.
I am amazed by your motion test and rigging videos, it moves convincing and nice.
You have come a long way with this, great work.
Me wants wires too.
Thank you Robo ... much appreciated.
I have a rendered version of the early motion test
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gk6yAxp0I_Y&feature=youtu.be
and a real time render the entire block-out.

Moving on to polishing the animation before I render the entire motion test.
congratulations on you achievements Bingo - I have to say - dispite your learning difficulties - you have done really well with this. Anytime you want me to read the animation tutorials to you again in future, just shout me.
That's kind of you, although, your electronic voice is a little bit too creepy for me. Quick question, what is that dwarf doing under your desk?
Started the polish passes. This video shows 3 polish passes, the last being the most recent.
Great work
-Jeremy-
Cheers.
This is a render of the third polish pass. Won't be doing much for this for a while as I have other things on. But at some point I want to shoot some film to composite it into.

I can see similarities with your soda bot on this concept piece but I really think you shouldnt give up on the soda can bot. Sure its rough and aint not always as fun but if you give up on your ideas half way through, wouldnt you give up on your self a little bit too then? If your stuck, or just dosent feel its going in the direction you would want it to, then why not try to make it all over with a bit of planning, concepting and ofcourse all your knowledge from the last one.
