So - After knowing my best mate for 20 odd years - I thought I would try and do him something a bit more special for Christmas this year - rather than the usual drinking socks and gadgets.

His pride and joy is his Citroen H so I thought I would do him an art book - lots of renders and a making of. Something a bit different anyway!

So - First post is the ref (or a tiny selection of it!) - second post is some wip's. 2 days in and starting to take a bit of shape Smiling

Wow...Mega update Laughing out loud

The rounded ends that are near the petrol cap seem a little soft. might want to tighten them up a little.

I love how you keep making a bunch of stuff and post everything. Nice work, mate Laughing out loud

It's really cool to see regular updates!

Thanks andy - Yeah - your right about the ends on those horrific welded slats  - thankfully they are all instances and I'll tweak then all when I am detailing the thing.

impressive :)  Great idea for a gift Smiling been thinking of something similar for some time already for one of my good friends too.Glad to see someone actually working on it.  He has a 96 corolla and bunch of tunning (engine) done to it, body is all stock. so i am thinking some time in my life to make something like that. Does your friend know about the present? i mean, you sort of shared this with the world Smiling)

Thanks chaps - more update to come - haven't had time to upload anything in the last couple of days. So - No - he doesn't know its a pressie! But he isn't in the industry - (The dude and his lovely missus have proper jobs god help them!) so its not like they check out art forums!

just a bit more - got to hurry things along a bit - just not finding the time to do much at the mo! Really need to finish the base mesh by the end of this week to get the rendering done in time!

Pushed this on a fair bit tonight in 2 hours - Done almost all the detailing on the front engine hood. Built a few proxy engine parts like the radiator do there is stuff for photons to bounce off in the renders. Almost there! Time to start thinking about shaders.

Still chipping away at this (very slowly! Seems hard to find the energy after work to sit down for more than an hour or two! ) - Still hoping to have begun rendering by the end of the week.

And Andy! I haven't forgotten - that fuel cap is going to get a stern looking at!

Door action this evening - suprisinging tricky and required 2 remakes to maintain a flat surface with a double planar axis and a tonne of cookie cutter action. MOAR MESH!

Looks great, mate Laughing out loud

It nice to see the progress that you have made in a pretty fast amount of time.

I love the handle, btw! You might want to bevel the text a little so that it picks up on the normal well.

Keep it up!

phew...there! Its been a grind this last week - but they say the devils in the detail! Getting this render ready and doing some last second details along the way - playing with edge loops etc but hopefully be back with some renders in a few days. Will post test renders tomorrow if I get them done. Would love some crits and feedback on the lighting when it arrives. until then...!

Its gotta be good - My mate and his girlfriend know every inch of their restored van so I am aiming to do some photo realstic copies and then some mega paint jobs - Hot rod/hertz/school but/hotdog van - any suggestions welcome! Need about 15 in total.

great job, no critics from me Smiling. Are you gonna render it with mental ray or vray?

User offline. Last seen 3 days 5 hours ago.

Right - Re rendered the clay that I accidentally didn't post last night. Spent some time collapsing stacks and tidying things up for render. Slapped some basic shaders from my library (vray) that I have used for other projects.

The model has had a whole set of custom vray shaders made for this and I am currently about 2 hours from seeing my first proper render. In the meantime - heres the clay and a quick screen grab of the test (with basically no proper materials on!)

Couple of test renders - pretty raw with no additional AO pass or any photoshop/aftereffects work

So been working on the body paint shaders to match the real colour of the van. Slowly getting more happy. Added a proxy interior and now just need to texture the decals/grime in PTEX. also having a bit of fun - here is lowered hot rod v1! Check the gold spoiler! Not sure they had under car lighting in the mid 70's! And also playing arounf with some graphic design. This book is after all going to be a mixture of selected artworks!

Just a little update - just a few ideas on how to present this in other ways Smiling I'm having fun with it anyway! Can't wait to start putting the book together. I have a lot of post work to do now on these and think I might re-render the rear shot of the hod rod version.

Ps - the grain image isn't a mess up with the uploader -  for retro fans - thats a stereogram image i have been trying to make - think it looks pretty good!

thats one awesome monster truck, perhaps you can brighton it up a little in photoshop, cause it's a little dark in my opinion.

Right-o - Sorry its been a week or two. Been all up in finishing these images and working on the art book - that has now been ordered. I'll post some photos when it arrives. In the meantime - here are a selection of the contents :)  I have really enjoyed taking the original and messing around with it - Might do more of that sort of thing in future - Although - I think the original colour scheme works the best and obviously looks closest to the real thing.  The only question is - what to do next! Thanks for watching Smiling
