WORKSHOP #3 - Small Scene
Hey everyone! Welcome to the 3rd workshop here at eat3d! This one should give you guys a bit more of a challenge, as well as help you build up some practice in solidifying your pipeline.
RULES:
1. You must re-create the scene you see BELOW!
2. You must create 4 Assets
- Table - Max Tri count = 2,000
- Cup - Max Tri Count = 300
- Tray - Max Tri Count = 100
- Lunch Box - Max Tri Count = 3,000
3. Each Mesh must have a simple high poly model made for it, then baked and textured.
4. Once all 4 assets are done with low poly meshes and textures created, you must import them into a game engine of your choice. I personally used UDK, but anything goes!
5. Compose a scene that shows chaos using your created assets.
6. Create a dramatic, yet simply lit environment
* Note! - You may go beyond and add any touch ups you may like, but the ABOVE is required to finish this workshop
Below is the scene you must use as guidance as well as a snapshot of a few high poly models I baked down for game res model creation.
Post up plenty of pics showing your progress. And most importantly, POST UP YOUR FINAL IMAGE SHOWCASING YOUR SCENE!
GOOD LUCK TO ALL!
-Jeremy-
This is a good one guys.
Woooow! can't wait to start! Thank you guys!
Glad you like it
Can't wait to start seeing everyone's progress!!
-Jeremy-
Great start! The model is looking nice
My only critique would be to exaggerate the bolts and details a bit more so that you get a really good normal bake.
Can't wait to see what else you crank out!
-Jeremy-
As a side note!
Please post frequently so we may see your progress and critique it. Do not wait until the very end to post up a result.
Thanks
-Jeremy-
Texture limits???
I have left it open to your own judgement. You may also look at the image of mine for reference. These sizes are not ideally what you would want for an actual game, but for an exercise, they work just fine. So as long as they are reasonable, that is all that matters.
-Jeremy-
@Caffeineadic - Nice blockout
Can't wait to see an update!
@Steve_3d - Great job! However on my model I have beveled all the Z+ facing faces so that it will bake correctly on a flat plane. This might be kind of hard to see in the images above. I will post up a snapshot when I get off work. Other than that, it looks good to go!
-Jeremy-
ceribral - Will do!
I beefed up some details that were looking a lil too flat and that they wouldn't add too much pop to the normal map. Thank you for pointing that out.
caffeineadic- Looking forward to seeing your progress with this.
steve_3d - The circular separator is way too thin. It will not look that great once you bake a normal. Look more closely at the scene and you'll see that. Other than that it looks clean.
So I added the cup and tray. I made 2 versions with 2 different bases. I decided not to go with the same design but I chose something thats not very different to the one in the scene. I made 2 versions because of the budget .I'll do some test bakes once I get to that stage and see which one will work the best. All I have to do right now is the table and it is all done for the high polys. Looking forward to seeing everyones progress.
Thank you guys! I will correct and do more things as soon as I can, because I have a lot of college work, sorry about that Jeremy!
Keep on going guys!!
Certainly, awesome work @SsSandu_C!! I love the old school lunch box!
Great work and Nice feedback
Great Progress SaSandu_C. You are making great head way very fast! Can't wait to see more
Btw, is the tray, lunchbox, and cup all balancing on each other?! haha I love that lol
-Jeremy-
Any time duration?
Hey Jassi
We post up a new workshop every 2 weeks. However, there is no set time for completion or a time to start or stop. Anyone is allowed to attempt any of the workshops at any time!
-Jeremy-
yeah good news thanx
Great work guys! I've gotta hop on one of these soon. One more week until graduation!
Can't wait to see what you will do! And gratz
-Jeremy-
Nice progress man
I like how you have the welds.
My only critique would be the pentagon bolts. They won't pick up in the normal map well due to their really straight sides. I would bevel those in.
Great stuff! Make sure to keep us updated and I can't wait to see it textured
-Jeremy-
Here Are my high poly assets I must say 100 for the plate is a little low but I will work it out.
Great job Devingeesr
I like the twist!
And I can see how 100 tris might seem low, but realistically speaking, if this tray were over 50 tris in a real game, you would be murdered by your art lead. So 100 is pretty generous
Just try and remember, rely on the normal map. You could capture the silhouette of this object with less than 40 tris easy, and let the normal take care of the rest. And it will still look awesome.
-Jeremy-
I found it really hard to get it down to 56 let alone 30 I guess if I trimmed the bottom. I'll post the update soon.
@devingeesr First off looking great!
I would deffinately agree with @ceribral, Normal maps are boss! dont be afraid to trust in it's power, and in my opinion they are especially good at captureing a large amount of detail on hard edged simplistic objects such as trays, maybe do some testing and see what you can come up with in that respect.
Also, the style of lunchbox seems really cool to me, is it going to be metal? I would bear in my that traditionally metal lunch box's have less round edges, I really like that rubber looking handle you've got on there too, I can see that coming out really nicely with maybe some kind of gritty worn rubber style. Good luck!
@ceribral I can see the detail captured in the normal map for the tray you posted, but is there any chance of you posting a wireframe of it up for perspective? Thanks
Those are the high poly meshes I'm still working on the low poly but I will post soon. i agree with you guys on the power of the normal map I'm just worried about the silhouette of the object.
Making some nice headway
Can't wait to see an update!
-Jeremy-
Wow!!! I'm just discovering Eat 3D workshops and its a greaaat idea!!!
Is there any deadline to finish this one? =]
We post up a new workshop every 2 weeks. However, there is no set time for completion or a time to start or stop. Anyone is allowed to attempt any of the workshops at any time!
Okay! Thank you for the answer! So I think, I'm in for the number 4!
So after creating the normal map I had to go into NDO and fix some problems.
Very nice! It looked like the bake came out well.
Make sure and post some texture flats!
Can't wait to see an update
-Jeremy-

Here are my base texture maps
Great Job! Those bevels came out really strong and will pick up lighting info like no other
Can't wait to see more.
-Jeremy-
This is awesome!!
Love how the details and the shape comes out!
Great bakes! I really can't wait to see them textured
The lighting really shows up well on those.
-Jeremy-
Here is the UDK scene starting to come together. I'm still working on the table.

Here is the table High poly in progress.

When is workshop 4 going to come?????
i was waiting for it from a long time?
@Anon,
Soon...I have been really busy over the past few weeks, but I will try and get something up over the next few days

- Table = 678
- Cup = 286
- Tray = 56
- Lunch Box = 1,682
Here are the main texture maps one main texture for the cup tray and Lunch box 1024x 1024 and one for the table 1024 x 1024.

Great job on getting the scene fully finished!
One of the things that stands out with this scene is the scale seems off. I would go through and try to resize some items.
-Jeremy-
The items should be bigger I'll make some adjustments!
@SsSandu_C
Thanks for the input man yours is coming along nicely can't wait to see the update.
I'm no good with 3D Modeling but I'm quite good with game engines, you should try placing some of this stuff in the CryEngine 3. They have some really good light rendering :3

Nice! I cant wait to see what people come up with
