So i had some sub compact gun ideas but im not sure how i would get those ideas implemented on zbrush. I imagine zspheres are the way to start up but later on in the sculpt (if i manage to get that far) how would i apply minor add-on features to the weapon. like bolts or the end of the barrel sticking out?

Also i haven't seen any tutorials on making guns, whats up with that?

i wouldnt do something like a gun in a sculpting program. you'll be tearing your hair out. just do it in 3ds max with subd.

Agreed roosterMAP,its not very effecient way to model inorganic shapes in a sculpting app...

try luxology MODO.Its very powerful 3d application and much more cheaper then 3dsmax.

While I do agree that hard surface modeling in programs such 3ds max, maya etc is a perfectly fine route to do some sub-d modeling in, however..

With the new features added onto Zbrush 4, modeling hard surfaces has found another place to call home. Features such as the new clip brushes, shadow boxing, masking brushes, and much more has made making hard surface models in Zbrush a hell of alot easier.

Heres a few examples

as for your question krato I haven't come across any tutorials making a "gun" but there are tutorials that cover the new features of Zbrush 4 that can be applied to making any hard surface model

I would start here with the Zbrush classroom tutorial videos

Other videos/tuts I found after a quick search

Zbrush is not the greatest tool for hardsurfaces... It doesn't have great tools to add good quality cuts into the mesh... Aka holes.... It doesn't do a amazing job with the clipping mask creating bad geomtry forcing u to retypo the mesh.... It not a program with enough pros to support doing hardsurface modeling over a program like max.... You could prob do the same thing in max and have it be more detailed and less of a headache... Zbrush is prob a good 1 to 2 verison away from being a great hard surface modeling tool.... Digital tutors did a tutorial on how to model a glock in zbrush 4 if u really wanna pursue that their u go.... But as I said it be more time effective just to do it in max blender modo lightwave xsi softimage maya houndi silo gmax ect ect ect ......

ZBrush is great for HS...You can do some amazing things in a comparable time if you know the tools well enough Smiling

Most of what he did was  based off extraction from a base concept.... and most of the shapes he does are simple planes/planes box shapes which u could do in any program... max could of done the same thing with cleaner geometry and used zbrush for the bolt detail.  2nd that isn't a true render he did all the texturing in photoshop hence no turntable.... Plus he never redid the typology meaning it prob a mess....

In terms of hard surface why would I wanna redo the topo when i could just a program like max have 2 edit polies for all my meshes 1 hp edgeflow and one without so I do the lp and hp almost at the same time..  2nd When u start with a 3d concept of something made out of circles or whatever it would be pretty easy to do extractions and somehing like that...

Zbrush doesn't handle hp hard surfaces BETTER than programs like max and modo and it doesn't do it FASTER thats my point.  When u add in redoing the edge flow and everything else it becomes a headache.
