 Classical Sculpting - Anatomy and Figurative Art for Digital Sculptors Review


The Classical Sculpting tutorial by is a detailed overview of the principles behind sculpting the human figure both digitally and traditionally. This DVD is not a technical instruction of using programs like Mudbox or ZBrush but an artistic analysis of the fundamental knowledge that is required to sculpt any type of figure work in the digital media. The tutorial brings the viewer's attention to some of the most important underlying concepts that every artist must eventually learn if he or she is interested in pursuing character art. With visually implied references to masters like William Bouguereau and Michelangelo there is clearly something to learn from this DVD whether you are an advanced or intermediate artist.


The author delivers clear and succinct information to the viewer. Throughout the DVD the instructor pauses the video to point out key features of both the underlying muscle masses and bony landmarks that are so crucial to the understanding of the human form. He uses paint overs and images to help the viewer clearly understand exactly what he is talking about when he refers to each major muscle group by name, as an attempt to reiterate and elaborate on his narration. 


The first six chapters of the dvd cover the anatomy of sculpting the foundation forms of male form, focussing on the torso, arm, hand, leg and foot, and finishing with the head. The next chapter covers surface detailing including placing veins that are so common in high detailed models. Chapter 7 covers some of the common pitfalls of amateur sculptors that can destroy and resemblance of realistic human anatomy, as well as comparative summary of the differences of female and male anatomy. Chapter 8 finishes the modeling and discusses the interaction between two different meshes and certain points to be aware of when combining two figures into one image. The final chapter shows the student how to render out a realistic "marble render" using the Subsurface Scattering shader in Maya.   


In two hours the instructor demonstrates what I myself learned in nine months while studying with a professor from the Angel Academy of Art in Florence. These two hours are packed with essential knowledge that one cannot fully comprehend and synthesize in one viewing. This is one DVD that you will constantly be going back to for references and refreshers on understanding the essentials of creating character art.
