I had to think long and hard about this contest and if I had the time for it. I may not be able to finish it in time. I have a baby due at the end of this month so my time may go to 0%. I will give it a go though.

I am a big fan of the Enders Game book series by Orson Scott Card. I am going to concept up a version of the harvesting machines the Buggers used to start cleaning the earth in China during the first Formix war - Burning Earth. These were large machines that cleaned away everything on the earths surface destroying everything their paths. This was a bloody slaughter of many innocent human citizens. Over 300,000 were killed by the machines before Earth nations were able to cooperate together and fight off the bugger fleet.

There are two reasons I am doing this subject. First I love the book series and already wanted to do a piece from it. Second, you never know when they may be doing the movie and having a good art piece taylored towards it may just get some notice.

I will be sketching up some concept work this weekend and will post it up here once I get an idea that I like.

More to come soon and I wish everyone good luck!

Thanks guys. We just had a doctors appointment this morning. looks like the time table has moved up to sometimes this week. *SCARED GHOST WHITE LOOK*

So I did some research over the weekend. Since the Formix are bug like in nature and appearance, I wanted this machine to look very similar but be very mechanical with hard edges etc.

I did some brainstorming and realized this machine has to be massive so it must provide its own tranportation through space as a large vessel as well. It also must be able to accomodate any terrain it encounters when it lands and commences dessimation.

So I started thinking of Crabs and how they can walk underwater and on most uneven surfaces. At first I was thinking of the Alaskan Red Crab, but then I remembered the Coconut Crab that resides all over Southern Asia and India.

If this machine were to be desingned similar to a crab, the legs can tuck away into the torso area to make it the shape of a ship for space travel but then unfold for easy land manuvering when it reaches a planet as it commences the decimation of the planets surface. If a leg is destroyed or damaged it would still be able to manuever without the whole unit being compromized.

This will be the design direction that I am going to go with. I have attached some images of the Coconut Crab.

Tonight I will start to do some sketches to plan out the look of the legs and torso in a mechanical aspect. that is if I am not doing the Bill Cosby Puuush Puuuush. Eye-wink

Thanks Jeremy, Imagine it being the size of a small city obliterating everything underneath its path while burning and tilling the land like a giant tractor combine. The goal of the Formix was to destroy the natural plant and wildlife so they could transplant the plants from their planet.

I wasn't able to get my sketches done last night. We were in the hospital last night from 11 P.M. to 4 A.M. because my Fiance was having contractions about 5 minutes apart. They sent us home when they didn't progress any farther. Talk a bout a rough night of no sleep and sitting in a plastic chair for about 5 hours. She is doing good now though. The contractions have slowed down now. She has been sleeping all day and resting.

Hoping I have time to get something up soon.

I was able to sit down last night and get a Proxy model blocked out. This will help me understand the shape and proportions of the Model to see what direction I want to head in with each section. I am also trying to get a feeling for scale here as well. Since this machine started to burn the earth in China I could put a small scale model of the great wall or some skyscrapers underneath it.

Hey everyone, I wanted to get in an update and let you know why I have been MIA.

My baby girl was born Saturday the 9th 2 weeks early at 2:46 PM. She was 7 Pounds 6 Ounces. Her name is Inara. Her early coming has caused a little halt in my progression. I plan to start working on this again this weekend. I am very sleep deprived and had to return to work today. I am going to make my best effort to get this done in time.

I will have more to come this weekend.

Well after two weeks of no sleep and lots and lots of diaper and 2 A.M. feedings I finally found some time to sit down this weekend to plan out how the legs would fold in to the torso to make the ship hull shape when traveling through space.

I don't know if I will be able to get this project done in time but I will still keep giving it a try as I find time. I have never been so tired and worn out since basic training 13 years ago. *sigh*

Here I have rigged up the legs in Maya and folded them under the torso. From here, I plan to mirror the geometry and then bring it into Zbrush for concepting. I will then be using the same techniques used in the Zbrush Hard Surface kit to block out the mechanical look and detail of the ship with the legs folded in. From there I will know how everything fits together. This way when I unfold the legs, I still keep the contour shape in the legs that makes them fold together seamlessly. There will be two states this model will be rendered in. This will be "legs closed" which represents how it looks in space for interstellar travel and then with "legs open" when it is on a planets surface.

Just a quick reminder about the process for your final submission Smiling

Please ensure that your final submission has everything that is required for entry, edited into your first post (beauty shot's and turntables etc.)

  • You must provide an unsmoothed wireframe beauty shot of the finished model, from multiple angles.
  • You must submit at least 1 final beauty shot that is at least 1280x720.
  • You must submit at least 1 turnaround movie of the vehicle created in any application of your choice.
  • Post your final image on the first post in your thread using our "File Attachments" system.
  • Upload your video turnaround to a popular video sharing site (Youtube, Vimeo, etc) and post the link/embed in the first post of your thread in the " Video Link" field.

Also please make sure that you edit the title of your thread to have - Final at the end.

e.g. High Poly Vehicle - metalliandy - Final

Thanks and good luck! Smiling

Well as I thought I wasn't able to even come close to getting this done. I will continue this project over in the work in progress section of the forums. I do want to finish it. My new baby daughter has been my priority on extra time the past month and I didn't want to make any exceptions for that once in a lifetime experience with her. I leave you with an image of her and I on her first day at home a month ago.

There are some really good looking models that have come out for this competition. I wish everyone luck. I will definately be ready to participate fully in the next competition.

Thanks Guys!
