High Poly Vehicle - Helder Pinto - Final
I feel kind of bad because I couldn't complete my previous entry on the previous compo, so here I am again, and hopefully to finish something!
The Dozer tutorial is amazing, so I'm glad you guys are giving it the exposure it deserves and making a compo along the lines of the tutorial.
Anyway, I'm going to do something Millitary / Sci-fi, something like the Aliens APC and a Military sci-fi Tank, and add a little bit of Scott Robertson into the mix.
So you can find on this first post, the concept art from Scott Robertson I inspired myself from, 4 renders, the wires from the unsmoothed model, and finally the turntable video (I apologize for the horrible render, but I had to do it in the last day and it's choppy, short, low res, etc; but I have never done this before either so that didn't help)
Thanks everyone, I had loads of fun!
Cool concept ! Looking forward to see your startup modeling !
Awesome choice of concept. Should turn out great
Nice surface details to work with. Best of luck.
Very interesting design! I like the tires and lights a lot. Very innovative! Good luck!
-Jeremy-
Nice! Good luck
Thats a cool concept! Looks like something Batman would have if he had a military truck instead of a car in the new films!
Thanks a bunch guys!
Will get started on the blockout asap.
I'm really pumped about your entry, man
Should be fantastic
Great start mate
hey Helder! awesome, will be keeping an eye on this thread! might join the competition myself...will see if i find something as cool as yours
Good Luckman! gonna be awesome!
Abe
Nice start! Looks like it will be fun to do. Best of luck!
solid!
i cant wait to see it
Updates! I demand updates. ^^
I actually can't wait for updates either!
Great concept, great artist. That's going to be a nice one
ah ah, cheers guys. I'll post somethign tomorrow - don't except much, didn't have a lot of time to work on it.
Started working on the back a bit; I swore to myself I wasnt gonna get stuck with details too much in the early process, i wanna tackle the model as a whole and leave the floaters and high frequency details to last.
So anyway...
(Btw, I'm not trying to mimic every detail and every shape and line of the concept. I'm interpreting it and even though I'm trying to stick pretty close with it, I am and I will take a lot of liberties)
Nice work man. I also loved reading the interview for NGHS. If anyone hasn't read it, here's a link NextGenerationHardSurface . Coming from someone hoping to break into the industry, this is very inspiring. So, thanks and continue the great work!
Nice progress man
-Jeremy-
looking good coming out nicely...
man, pretty cool. i like how you show it off. like on that magazine cover. Once u get the tires in, i think the shape will speak for itself :)
Some progress, especially on the tires.
Personally, I hated how the rims turned out, it's noisy and it's just too much. Which is weird cos it's exactly like in the concept, maybe it's the AO that's killing it, for now i'll leave it like this, i'll get back to it later.
I decided to go with something minimal for the tires itself (the rubber part), pretty much like the concept too, but I will iterate on it further later on.
I think that it looks fine. It may be because it's in contrast to the rest of the model (I get that same vibe from the concept, too), but I like the wheels as they are. Nice!
Good point, I think the fact that the model is still missing it's high frequency detail, it contrasts with the rims a lot - that's why I wanted to avoid getting carried away with detail while I'm still working on the model.
low, med only then high frequency stuff (like floaters)
thanks for the feedback man.
Nice update mate
I think once all the other small details are on the model, everything will fit in perfectly
You are really nailing this mate
That looks really awesome!
I really like the way you have managed the details on the wheels .
High poly stuff is nice and clean. I want to see more!
Cool vehicle design
Really dig the futuristic feeling of it all. Gonna be nice to see you put it all together.
Great update
Love the design!
-Jeremy-
I have died and gone to APC heaven. I love these vehicles. Ever since Aliens
Lovely concept, looking forward to the end result
Hey Helder, nice work so far!!
looking awesome
Coming along nicely man. Maybe you could beef up the bolts a little more so they'll read a bit better in the final render.
Good point Sean, somebody told me it's too wide in comparison to the concept, and I just realized it is indeed.
Oh well, i'm not aiming at something 100% alike, and I like the fact that it's nice and fat.
I think you nailed the form if you compare it with the first reference image you posted. Looking at the black/white version in the 3D app it looks like either the perspective makes is look less wide or perhaps the plane you used is slightly off scale? Still, I like the current dimensions
definitely my favorite entry here!
Thanks man, yeah I'll keep the dimensions for now at least.
Decided to do a little bit of detailing for the fun of it, here's a couple of progresses, mostly gribble and surface detail but here it goes. Also, i'll post a overall shot with the wire on it.
(Again, sorry for the JPG compression but it's the forum attachment system's fault)
Awesome work. Out of curiosity do you prefer to model hard surface objects with boxes or plains, or perhaps a 50/50 split between the two.
awesome work Helder! and dont worry about the compression, you cant see it really
(on my 30" dell screen
)
Excellent work. The tires don't look so out of place anymore now.
Great Progress! This would be a fun bake
-Jeremy-
PerfectBlue well I like to work from low to high. What I mean by that is, I try to sketch the basic form of what I wanna do with a very rough and low poly version, when the dimensions are in place, I start to add the support edges and detail it all out.
Some folks prefer to build form and start out with a plane and edge extrude their way in, but I prefer to see what I'm doing all the time.
But that doesn't mean one shouldn't start out with a plane, it really depends on what your doing, but for shapes like this, where you really have to nail dimensions and such, it's better to start with a boxy shape.
Thanks everyone.
are you using 2012 max?
i see "realistic" viewport at the top left there, dont remeber it in 2011)
btw, is it working more accurate than in 2011?
Awesome work as always, man
In regards to the thumbnail compression, its down to a global compression that is used on the forum to reduce the bandwidth for people loading pages, so that the forum loads threads faster. The actual image remains unchanged once you click it.
We are looking into a better way to do this. Hopefully by next week sometime.
lookin awesome HP. pretty solid to the concept.
metalliandy, a good "fix" would be to show a thumbnail then, not the actuall picture. Just resize the picture to 25% or so and "force" people to click on it to see the full thing.
ershow, yeah man, I'm using max2012, I love it for sub-d modeling, it can handle loads of polys, way more than previous max's.
Thanks Oniram.
really good work ,keep it coming!

Mmm, guess the image didn't work, attaching it to the post then.
