OK Im pretty new to all this and just recenty purchased the training dvd so I guess now is the time to see if it paid off Eye-wink

I was kinda inspired by part 2 of the series and how the character was some sort of evolved bat guy so thats where I started. Im likely to stray away from that though and make alot of entries . . cuz I just LOVE Zbrush!

ok so heres bat thingy finale'  --I didnt know how to change the initial post at first so if I repeat myself please forgive

Being that Im really new to both Zbrush and the 3d scene, this has been a very experimental and developmental process. I really enjoyed this comp and the company of all the other artisits that partook of this.

thanks man.

Nah Im not using any refference. Im just winging it.

I did put down a few sketches for alternate head designs yesterday. If I make those heads in 3-D do I have to include thhose sketches as refference material cause my scanners no good.

ok well I dont know if topology has anything to do with the contest but he retoped on the dvd so heres my retoped head.

I lost some detail due to alot of artifacting though but it'll be aight. After all I went from over 3 mil for just the head to a 200K semi bust.

I got some sick plans for this sculpt and would update the crap outta him but this hair has me seriously stumped. My pen and paper skills are so far ahead of my ability to sculpt its driving me mad! Sticking out tongue

hey nerf, this looks like a promising start i think.

to improve your sculpt i suggest using reference to get more realistic  anatomy, and not to do that much details before you didn't get the proper weight and masses to your sculpt. I normally do all the basic shaping and volume on  subdiv 3 and 4 if i start from a polysphere for example. hope that helps a bit

cheers

Hey nerf!

Looking great so far. Think you nailed the teeth shape already!..Smiling

I am far from decent at sculpting myself but I agree with what schiefer said. Like in the DVD....if it is the one from this site....don't be afraid to jump back to lower subdivisions and make adjustments there.

Personally I liked him better with his eyes closed....think because all your facial expression complements it.

BTW...Carlos Cabrera has done some concept characters with similar expressions and facial structures like yours...maybe you can check them out for some more inspiration...also his colors rock!

All the best for the comp man!

thanks for the feedback guys, Your all helping me develop my zbrush skills and its much apreciated. I even think Im coming along fairly rapidly considering how noobish I am Sticking out tongue

but nevermind that .. I droped my head down a few and got rid of like 4 subD's and started over trying to keep a better eye on form.

Thing is Im still not ussing any ref. hard headed I know but I think Ill just go with looking at all you guys work and trying to step my game up Sticking out tongue

I think I know what my problem might be, Im so used to pen and paper I seem to be making some deep cuts in the sculpt as if they were strokes of the pen .. maybe Im overanalyzing but heres my new prog so far..

I think this is a great step forward nerf. Try to distinguish the soft and the hard parts when doing heads, so it becomes more clear where there is the bone closer beneath the skin and where there is soft tissue and muscles. And keep in mind that the bony parts do not deform Eye-wink just the stuff that sits on top.

I personally like to blockout those bony parts like the forehead, the mass of the skull, the cheekbones and the chin at a very early stage and put the soft stuff on top of that. The clay brsuh is really great to do all that . Hope that helps

keep up the good work dude, btw i really like his teeth Smiling

cheers schiefer

ps:start using ref - it helps so much Eye-wink

You actually read my mind on that clay brush dude.. thats what I used to make all the new folds in his skin. Im kinda shooting for thck and leathery'ish type skin sort of like a cross between a bulldog and a cow .. yeah I know he suposed to be a bat creature but still!

Maybe I should grab some doggy reff Sticking out tongue

Thanks for the guidance bro I'll try to figure out wich hard edges feal soft and start woring on them

P.s. I LOVE the flatten brush way better than smooth, it just feals more like working with real clay to me xD

Hey nerf!

Very nice progress on this bulldog, cow,bat thingy!

I like how you broke the symmetry, the pose and the bitten ear.

I kinda liked what you were doing with the opened eyes and the hair, i wonder if you dropped that idea?

If i had one suggestion it would be to accentuate the folds of the "nose" and brow area. If you try to do the same expression in front of a mirror you will notice how you can exaggerate that area in your sculpt.

I really like what you have done with this and the way it has turned out!

Cheers!

Thanks for the words of encouragment dude, Im still learning things that your guys have all seemed to have mastered Sticking out tongue

-But yeah I droped the open eye thing. I came up with a kinda in pain type of look I wanted to shoot for with the eyes closed and for some reason opening the eyes just kinds feals wrong to me. maybe if I started with opend eyes it woulda been a different story.

-As for the hair I preffer my original idea of long fur grown into braids or matted into dreads and to have a human skull/shrunken head tied into his braids kina like a decorative necklace thing but I really have no idea how to do it Sad I tried and for me it fealt like an epic fail.

-- SOB I forgot to save the Ztool with the pose OMFG?!?!  Im so sad now Sad

These are all of my heads created from spheres in zbrush. In otherwords its pretty much my entire head portfolio Sticking out tongue and I wanted to recreate some of these with my new skills and enter them but since it seems I wont be able to Ill just post them for the fun of it! Laughing out loud
