I updated the rules to explain how to include your video turnaround (this is optional). Please upload it to Youtube or Vimeo and post the link in the "Video Link" field. See image below:

Hey Guys, i am new here,

first post. One of my friends suggested the site...

I am interested in this challenge, however wanted to work in a team, i have a concept artist,

and i do the modeling.

Can we team up for the challenge and to have submitted work with both of our names?

Thanks

You can use his concept and give him credit for that but you have to do everything else. If you end up winning something and want to share your prize that is also up to you. So in other words we are not doing teams but you can use a friends concept.

Just wondering about the textures, when it states 16 * 1024 x 1024, will that be 16 objects with say 1k diffuse, specular and normal.
Or will it be a total of 16 textures, where one object with diffuse, specular and normal will count as 3 textures?

I am guessing it's the last one, but i want to be sure Sticking out tongue

Riki's picture
Posts: 1257

It just means you have a total of 4096x4096 pixels to use for your diffuse. You also have 4096x4096 pixels for spec, and 4096x4096 for normal, etc. You can use any combination of texture sizes but the total cannot exceed 4096x4096. So that means you could have 4x2048x2048 or 16x1024x1024, etc.

I hope this helps!

So is there any chance that the powers that be would consider moving the the deadline back a couple of weeks due to the fact that Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years have all landed during this contest.

I know that my productivity has been really hurt by all of the stuff going on around the holidays and traveling.  Just thought I would throw the idea out for consideration.

Thats not the worst idea I've ever heard.  Any extension would make a big difference..

Would be cool to get an extension and not get stressed out this holiday.

Usually when you are working on a project there's a dead line.
If you don't finish in time u could get fired. ^__^

One of the biggest challenge on comepetion like this is to get the work finish in time and planning all the aspect of the production.

I do not agree with mrBlonde and arsenal ^_^.

Hey guys,

I can understand 100% why people would want extensions for any project, as often time flies by with little regard for deadlines but the problem with giving extensions during any competition or challenge is that its only really fair for the people who are behind or lagging.

There have been many occasions with other challenges where you have a bunch of people who finish on time and submit their final entry minutes before the deadline only to see it extended for another week and personally, i don't think this is very fair as it gives those who are behind an unfair advantage over those who meet the deadline.

I think the only time we would probably consider an extension for any challenge, is if something happened that was beyond the entrants control that physically prevented them from submitting their entry on time.(the Eat3d server going down, for example)

Hope that helps Smiling

After 10+ years in the industry I am well aware of deadlines and what it takes to get a job done.  I was just pointing out that this competition spanned three major holidays, where a lot of us not only have heavy loads at work but also have obligations to our families as well.  It is what it is, but this is something that should be considered for future competition deadlines.

We are committed to stick to the deadline to be fair to everyone. I agree that we should have considered this better before announcing the competition, and its something we will keep in mind for the future. Also we made this contest a little longer than then last one I think to compensate for the holidays.

Personally I usually have more time during the holidays to do personal work because I dont have to be at work which usually demands most of my time. I know its different for everyone though.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Hiya

What's the best way to render the asked wirefram shot? The wireframe view in UDK is not very clear in my opinion. What kind of wires render would you guys like?

Sorry if this has been asked before. but what does the rules say about particle effects. say I create a torch particle effect.. how does that count towards my triangle count?

Usually a wireframe from the 3d Package (eg. 3ds max) looks better and is easier to see what is going on.

It doesn't effect the triangle count but also the judging will be on the environment. If you have too many particles or if they distract it will do more harm than good. If there is something subtle it wouldn't hurt.

What does it mean "final submission must be put in the first post"?

I'm a little confused. Doesn't the most recent post be put at the top anyway? Or is their a setting that I am missing?

The final image has to be in the very first created post on the thread (not the most recent). So in your case go here : http://eat3d.com/forum/contests-and-challenges/nextgen-small-scene-andrewmackie08

Then edit the first post (the one that starts with "First time posting on this forum.") and then attach the image, etc.

You can see how barr did a great job here: http://eat3d.com/forum/contests-and-challenges/nextgen-small-scene-barr-hollowtree-final

Are we allowed to only have one "beauty shot"? or can we post more for the final?

You must submit one "final" beauty shot for the entry, but feel free to add extras images if you want (things like wires etc.) Smiling

Barr did a great job HERE

Hope that helps Smiling

Hey guys!

Not long to go now Smiling

Please ensure that your final have everything that is required for entry edited into your first post (beauty shot/s, textures and turntables etc. (see the rules in the first post to see what is required)

Also please make sure that you edit the title of your thread to have ::Final at the end.

e.g. NextGen Small Scene - metalliandy - Awesome Scene :: Final

Thanks and good luck! Smiling

N00b here, so asking stupid questions...

On my 'beauty shot' can I show my scene twice? My scene I have a door can I turn it show the outside of the door can be seen as well as the inside of the room? (Please look at my entry if that is confusing)

How many beauty shots, wire frame, should I show full res of the texture? Or just give me an entry's name and will try to do what they did.Thank you

I changed my first post and attached the final images through the file attachments. They just show up as clickable links instead of previews. I did exactly the same thing at the bottom of the thread as a new reply and there it works.

It looks like the thread was named incorrectly and thus wasn't picked up automatically and put in the finished entries.

Let me look into it and i will see what i can do Smiling

Riki's picture

Its unfortunate the thread wasn't named correctly and its late because the judges already voted.

In the contest thread it says this in the submission: "Title your thread with the challenge name followed by your user name e.g. NextGen Small Scene - metalliandy"

Your thread was named like this NextGen - Small Scene - Biano.

I contacted all the judges and gave them until midday tomorrow to let me know if the entry changes their votes. Hopefully they will all repy by then so we can release the results tomorrow.
