What is the definition of a "small scene" though? Where to you draw the line between just big enough and too big?
I so happy that eat3d doesn't forget the environment artists.

I realize some terminology is confusing. The goal is to produce something similar to the texturing DVD. Something that is self contained and would look good in a turnaround video or something like that. It needs to be contained within itself and shown off easily within a screenshot if that makes sense. Just a small scene. Imagine the Old and Damaged contest we just had but just expanded a little further to make something a little more complex. Also we are focusing on different material types to really push the texturing aspect of the competition.
Just remember bigger isnt better. If what i said doesnt make sense I will try and think through it some more for a more clear definition.
Yes, yes, YEEEES!
If you already own an Intuos 4 Medium like my self, could we give it to 3rd place if we choose? I'd rather it go to someone who doesn't have one but deserves it.
Any ways, this competition is ganna be awesome
I think I might have to join this one.
Great!
Regarding the material types, is 4 both the minimum and max amount or just the minimum? Basically, can we have more than 4 different material types if we choose to?
Oh man oh man! I love the Eat3d Challenges!
I don't know if I'm going to enter hmmm...good luck to everyone that does though!
Edit: Just re-read the prizes...got to shoot for 2nd again! Want to get that Intous for my gf, lol.
AWESOME!@ i just joined as soon as i heard about this ><.
so i can use multiple objects right.. it doesn't have to be one big collect of objects
edit: what about small animations in the turnaround?
Hey Riki! Thanks for this great innitiatives!
I think I'll give this one a shot, it looks challenge enough and the dead-line is fair!
Good luck everyone!
Question: Is the 4 different material types minimum? Can we add more?
HP! Another entry that'll force me to push my self
Question: Is the 4 different material types minimum? Can we add more?
yes, add as many as you want but remember the texture budget.

yes it can be multiple objects and yes there can be small animations.

Just the minimum, you can have more.
Damn, this sounds great. Too bad I can't enter this one, too packed with school work right now. I really hope to enter one of these competitions eventually, there are some great prizes.
Can't wait to see the entries.
WOW!!! This sounds cool... Eat 3D challenges are really great.. i think I'm going to enter.. All the best for every one..
I feel the same way couto607. But I will still attempt something small! Maybe not finish in time but have something to work with later
I was wondering whether you are allowed to team up with someone?
Awesome! I'm in. This came pretty fast, didn't even have time to start my next personal project. But I'll give it my best again!
[only a groundplane is allowed. (a simple floor/ground. No pedistal allowed)]................??????
plz give me some details..........

For this contest only single entrants are allowed, though we may have a challenge in the future where teams are allowed to enter.

Because it is a scene, you are allowed to have a ground plane or a simple floor to display your work and the cost of that ground plane or simple floor will not be counted against your texture or poly budget.
A simple floor is not a requirement though, and you could have a ground mesh that is more detailed as long as you include it within your budget.
Awesome! What a great idea for a contest and cool prizes too
Not sure if I'll have time to take part as I've already started the Dominance War V pre challenge.
There are so many competitions on at the moment and so little time...
This sounds pretty cool, think I'll give it a go.
Great competition. I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this, but if you duplicate static meshes in UDK does that count towards the final polygon count for this competition?
Yes it does. The easiest way would be to import it all as 1 mesh and assign the different materials.
Quick question; is this allowed to create a robot in the scene.
Like in this example :

If the robot is created with two materials, like metal and plastic, it counts for 2 materials right ?

I dont see a problem with that. Keep in mind the judging will be focused on the environment primarily. Also yes that would count as 2 material types.
Cool !! Great contest !! Let's Make it :)
Is it ok to post progress on other forums to get advice?
When you say ground plane only does that mean that it cannot be a simple room?
When you say ground plane only does that mean that it cannot be a simple room?
You dont have to use the ground plane and its only there as an option for presentation purposes if your scene doesn't include a floor of its own and you want to put something there.
Feel free to make a room as you scene with its own floor (must be included in the budget though )

Rico is 100% correct!
Everything must be started from scratch for all Eat3d contests so that there are no factors that would give anyone an unfair advantage.
One Last Question then i will shut up and start working
Will the use of BSP count against our overall poly count?
Thanks
One Last Question then i will shut up and start working
Will the use of BSP count against our overall poly count?
Thanks
Yes BSP counts against the allotted budget
Couple questions.
1. Double sided materials . How they will count ? Doubled geometry or no ?
2. I have in mind to put some effects for turnable . Lets say , it will be grayscale texture that will be running over base diffuse . What type it will be ? Diffuse ?
3. Also i want to use light function in UDK . What type will be textures that i will use for this purpose ?
4. Can i use Decal Actors in UDK ?
1. Double sided materials . How they will count ? Doubled geometry or no ?
double sided materials do not count against anything.
2. I have in mind to put some effects for turnable . Lets say , it will be grayscale texture that will be running over base diffuse . What type it will be ? Diffuse ?
it can be its own texture but you must stay within the budget. The judging will primarily be on the environment itself (mesh, textures, lighting)
3. Also i want to use light function in UDK . What type will be textures that i will use for this purpose ?
it can be its own texture but you must stay within the budget
4. Can i use Decal Actors in UDK ?
Yes but the decal textures will go against the budget
1. Double sided materials . How they will count ? Doubled geometry or no ?
double sided materials do not count against anything.
Just to clarify.
For the purposes of this challenge, double sided materials will not add an extra geometry cost when compared to a single sided material but they still count against your budget in terms of triangles as if they were a single sided material.
e.g. You have a grass material on a single plane that is 2 tris and converting it to a double sided material will not increase the tri count to 4.
ok Im a total newb but I cant figure out how to start my own thread so I can enter this contest!
is entry is over .......
hey . .....how we post a new thread for challange.....
