After lasts year's positive reception to 8monkey's release of Toolbag, we've decided to make some major additions and updates. Behold, version 1.0:

http://www.8monkeylabs.com/toolbag

For those of you who don't know, Toolbag is a realtime material editor and presentation tool, based on our Marmoset engine. It features HDR image based lighting, and a wide array of material and shading options. It's a quick way to preview your work in a realtime engine (and we do mean quick). We think you'll find it presents your work in a most flattering way. v1.0 has several new features not present in the previous release, most notably:

* Dynamic light creation and editing
* Saveable scene files (save all your toolbag settings)
* Several new sky lighting presets
* Expanded post effects, including SSAO, DOF, and vignette
* Improved light and shadow accuracy and detail
* Expanded material options, including emmissive & gloss maps
* New debug & compositing render modes, preview options
* Greatly improved and reorganized user interface
* A bit of stank on it

And that's just the stuff we can remember. The trial version is a free download so by all means everyone go check it out post-haste. We think you'll like it.

I don't get it. Is it a plugin for a 3d program, or a program on its own, that you import you're models into?

Let me know if your question is looking for an answer deeper than this, but loading up your model and getting materials setup and applied to your model is super efficient and the core focus of Toolbag. Toolbag supports importing .obj, .fbx, and Marmoset's proprietary .mesh format. It'll also support .tga, .dds, .psd, and .pfm for your textures.

We want as little time as possible between your decision to open Toolbag and seeing your modeling/texturing results in a real-time environment. Thus allowing rapid iteration on your art assets and leaving the bulk of time spent tweaking lighting conditions, shader options, and post render settings to your hearts content.

>> UPDATE <<

We've just gone live with the first point update to Toolbag, version 1.01. Here's what's new in this version:

Additions:
* 2 Layer Phong material (blend between 2 layers of diffuse, normal and spec)
* FBX file loader (mesh only)
* RLE compressed TGA files are now supported
* Sky light brightness slider
* Double sided lighting

Fixes:
* Light editing controls now work with the field of view setting
* Improved z-projection settings, should dramatically reduce z-fighting in some meshes
* Refraction material fixes, wireframe display and texture editing
* Better default material (matte gray instead of pink wireframe)

This is a free update to all users, trial or registered. Simply download the new installer from our page (http://www.8monkeylabs.com/toolbag), and you're ready to rock. If you are a trial user, this will reset your trial to a new 20 day session to give you some more time to try it out.

A few other things as well. First, we have some videos up on the page demoing some of the features, and just generally making the thing look sexy. Check em out. Also, we are running a sale for the next few weeks, we'll be knocking off 20% for anyone who buys a key during that time.

We've been happy with the reception Toolbag has met and we hope you all are liking it. We plan to keep fielding suggestions from the community and keeping the ball rolling on that front with fixes and additions. If you like Toolbag, tell your friends! We don't have a big marketing budget or anything so it's going to be mostly word of mouth. We want to see our baby grow, of course, and the more users we have the more love we can justify giving it Smiling

Cheers,
