Real Sculpts
Hi everyone!
I was inspired recently over the weekend to give real sculpting another chance. I havent touched it in many years but always wanted to do cool stuff with it.
I started this time by simply trying to recreate the eat3d logo and after that i decided to try something much harder which would be a face with an extreme expression.
The logo is already baked and hard, the face i would consider only 60% done or so. I would like to get better and feel confident in doing the zbrush character, which would be very ambitious but fun
I would love any comments or critiques!
Thanks man! The sculpture you did inspired me a lot. Im hoping we can work together and do Pav's zbrush character in the near future. That might be ambitious but also a whole lot of fun.
My wife just sent me this..makes me want to try harder:

Wow Riki!
Nice job mate
The logo is looking spot on and the head is coming along very nicely.
When you spoke to me about them earlier, i knew they were going to be cool but i didn't realise they were going to be that good
How long did they take you and did you actually bite the logo?
Another awesome artist that might give some good inspiration is Laurel Austin who works for Splash Damage in London.
She does some really nice stuff.
@Chris,
Welcome to the forum mate!
Really great work on this Riki
The sculpting is really detailed and extremely precise (Logo Rocks!)
I think the face is coming along nicely, and as stated before, It has a lot of potential for future development. The expression is captured extremely well. As development ensues, I am sure it will continue to be refined into a well orchastraited, and well portraid expression. I also love the anatomy! Really good job Riki, I will be watching this thread with great anticipation
There are a few questions I did have:
1. Are you using a studio light setup? If so, what kind of lights are you using? Flood Lights, UDR Direct lights, etc?
2. What camera was used? What Mega Pixel is it?
3. Are you planning on painting the sculptures?
4. How are you baking them?
Once again, extremely interesting sculptures! And great use of talent! They are looking great.

Thanks for the kind words. Im surprised so many people asked me if I really took a bite, I guess that means its believable
. I printed out the eat3d logo and just tried to copy it exactly with grey super sculpey firm and some standard tools. I really want to get some chavant medium or hard clay to see what its like to sculpt with an oil base clay instead of a polymer.
Andy - Laurel is awesome! Thanks for sharing that
Jeremy - 1. I didnt use any studio lighting, its actually just in a normal room with overhead fluorescent lights (at work). I think 2-3 of the images were taken with an overhead incandescent light from the kitchen. I also took the images in photoshop and did some cropping, color correction and levels adjustment.
2. The camera was a nikon cookpix P80, its a pretty cheap digital camera.
3. I really want to buy an airbrush kit and practice painting. I havent been able to decide which airbrush kit to get yet, there are too many to choose from and researching hasnt lead me to any clear answers. So yes hopefully.
4. With super sculpey all you have to do is bake it in the oven at 275 degrees for 20min or so. For something larger it may take 30-40min. Its supposed to be 15min per 1/4inch thickness I think.
Ill try and post more updates, but I may be caught up in something the rest of this week, we will see!
Very nice once again and thanks for the response Riki! I really am looking forward to seeing more of this

Marvellous!
Riki, you are really inspiring me to do something similar.
Would you be so kind to tell (maybe take a photograph) what tools you are using and suggest some book, web pages or other info about sculpting for beginners? About 10 years ago I was making some stuff with plasticine. And now I'm wondering why I had given it up? Nice time to do it again and maybe with clay...
The threads below will help you dramatically. That is pretty much what i went off of, I also bought the video they made for like $30, but the threads seem to give pretty much the same information.

I just bought Super Sculpey Grey Firm to do the logo and made a simple wire and I also use a basic pack of tools i got from the hobby store.
For the face I mixed together half and half the grey firm sculpey and the regular peach super sculpey to make it a little softer to work with. The grey is pretty firm which is great for the details but when blocking out it was flake apart.
Thank you very much for links Riki. This is really it!
And thanks for the info about your personal experience.
Now waiting for your further progress in real sculpting.
Now only if Eat3D had a contest or something. You could get a mold of that and make a trophies that people could put on their desk!
wow, nice one RIKI

Man I'm glad to see you using that old creativity brother. The logo looks good, and the face shows the potential you have to make something complex down the road.
