Thinking Particles // Usable ingame ?

I am wondering if the thinking particles DVD's will teach me the knowledge on how to make ingame particles such as arround this creature:

If not, how would I learn something like this and using which software ? my goal is to get this effect working in CryEngine3. Greetz,
