Ryan James Smith has posted an awesome approximated SSS demo in UDK!
In the demo, Ryan uses a technique that was originally developed by DICE for Frostbite 2, which uses a modified AO map that is baked after inverting the normals of the high poly mesh and then inverting the results of the bake. This texture is then used as a volume map to approximate the Sub Surface Scattering.
