New DVD Release! Unreal Development Kit - An Introduction and Application

Eat 3D Blog

In this demonstration Sjoerd “Hourences” De Jong guides you through the Unreal Development Kit (UDK). Instead of giving a simple technical overview, Sjoerd uses over 10 years of personal and professional experience with Unreal Editor to create an entire exterior and interior environment from scratch. Along the way he explains many of the fundamentals about UDK and helps de-mystify many of its powerful features.

You will also learn from an Unreal Master exactly how to develop your own workflow and start making amaizing environments inside UDK right now.

For more information and a video sample, visit the product page here: http://eat3d.com/udk

One of the main reasons it wont work is because the instructor uses mostly UDK assets. You may be able to follow along using UT3 if you did everything the instructor does, but use different assets. So when the instructor places a door or modular piece, try and find something similar that comes with UT3. This is very limiting though and just a theory.

Your best bet will be to follow along with UDK and learn what you can from it and try and use what you learn in UT3. I think a lot of what you learn will translate indeed.

You wouldnt be able to open the UDK files in the UT3 editor but you can open UT3 editor files in UDK.

UDK is a bleeding edge version of Unreal Engine 3, which is available as a free download, so im not sure it would be worth the effort to try and convert the files to use them in the UT3 editor (which is also over 2 yrs old now).
The newest version of UDK came out only a few weeks ago and is updated every month so it really would be worth your time to try it out.

You wont regret it!

Also you wont be able to open the included files of course.

Is there any way to open the source files in UE3? A conversion or save or something that would let me use these files in UE3 and follow along in the video?
Thanx

There really isn't much difference covered in this video. The only thing I can think of is when he briefly talks about lightmass, and also the content browser looks a little different. Also you wont be able to open the included files of course. I think there is still tons of great info that can be used in UT3.

Yeah, that depends on what you mean by UE3. Do you mean UT3?

Yes, we use the engine that came with Unreal Tournament 3 (updated with the current patches).

I teach a video game design class in high-school using the unreal engine... I haven't played with the UDK, this video should be close enough to the unreal editor to use shouldn't it? Are there resources in the UDK we won't find in UE3?

UDK is the free version of UE3 so its features are as close as you can get to the bleeding edge commercial engine.

It depends what version of Unreal you are using to teach with, but there have been a large amount of really awesome additions to UE3 since UT3/GOW were released, so it would be definitely be worth checking this out if you want to get up to date with the newest tech Smiling

You can get UDK from http://www.udk.com/download

At lease this one is a bit different then the 3d buzz and the gnomon one, the gnomon dvd is just a repeat of the 3d buzz tutorials you get from the UDN site.
